Last night was nothing short of historic for our club! At the annual Kontich Sports Awards, Disc Golf Club Zuidrand took home 1st place, officially earning the title of "Sportclub van het Jaar". This victory is a huge milestone—not just for us but for the sport of disc golf itself, as we continue to gain recognition alongside more traditional sports like football and cycling!
Our club president, Jeroen, was overwhelmed by the win, saying: "Never expected us to win. For sure, it blows my mind how far we've come and have it still growing so fast."
This award means so much to us. More people in the Kontich area now know about disc golf, our home in Park Zandbergen, and what we do as a club. We hope this increased visibility will bring even more new players from the local community to try out the sport and join our growing family.
We also want to give a huge shoutout to the other incredible nominees, RV Waarloos vzw and Fudoshin, both of whom do outstanding work in the Kontich sports community:
- RV Waarloos vzw has been an integral part of Kontich’s sports landscape for over 60 years. Their collaboration with local youth groups and organizations has helped them grow steadily. They organize a wide range of sports activities, including an annual two-day football tournament, youth and adaptive sports cross-country races, and the 17th edition of their mountain bike tour—this year expanded to include a gravel ride and a road race. They even host a Christmas cross event!
- Fudoshin is dedicated to Japanese martial arts and has had an extraordinary year of training and international collaboration. In March, they participated in a two-day seminar with a renowned Japanese martial arts master. They also attended an intense 24-hour training session in Paris and spent three weeks in Japan during the summer, training with grandmasters. Their passion for martial arts led them to Kyoto and Osaka in November for a 15-day deep-dive training experience, forging lifelong connections. They also hosted a successful three-day training event in October with international participants and plan to do it again in 2025!
Both clubs deserve massive respect for their dedication and achievements. It was an honor to be nominated alongside them!
This victory fuels our excitement for the future. We’ll continue to spread the love for disc golf in Kontich and beyond. Thank you to everyone who supported us—this is just the beginning! See you all at Park Zandbergen for more disc golf action!
